Kumbh Mela, one of the largest spiritual gatherings in the world, is held every 12 years across four sacred locations: Haridwar, Prayagraj (Allahabad), Nashik, and Ujjain. In 2025, Prayagraj will host the Maha Kumbh Mela, also known as the Purna Kumbh, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for millions of devotees and visitors. The origins of this grand event trace back to the ancient legend of Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean. During this cosmic event, a pot of amrita (nectar of immortality) emerged from the ocean. A fierce battle ensued between the Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) to claim this nectar. To protect it, Lord Vishnu, in his Mohini Avatar, carried the Amrit Kalash (pot of nectar) to safety. Along the journey, drops of nectar fell at four locations: Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik, and Ujjain, making them sacred. The timing of Kumbh Mela aligns with a rare celestial event: Jupiter’s transit into the Aquarius (Kumbh) zodiac sign, while the Sun enters Aries. This alignment amplifies the spiritual energy, drawing millions of pilgrims seeking purification and blessings.
